A Conversation with Joseph Frasko

  • Q: Joseph, you’ve built and sold multiple businesses. How did that experience shape your approach to helping other business owners?

Joseph: Honestly, I’ve been in the exact position many business owners find themselves in today. When I was building my companies, I learned the hard way that it takes more than just great ideas or a solid strategy to grow. In one venture, I thought my MBA and a solid business strategy would be enough to carry us through. For a while, it did—but then things plateaued. I realized that without the right operational systems in place, growth can only go so far.

As an entrepreneur, I went through the struggles of scaling, managing resources, and aligning my team’s goals with the company’s future. And after exiting several businesses, I wanted to use that experience to help others navigate these same challenges more effectively. That’s why I started Aurora Capital.

  • Q: What drew you to private equity, and how did your entrepreneurial background influence your approach?

Joseph: I was always fascinated by the way top private equity firms focus on more than just finances—they bring in industry experts to improve operations and add real value. I saw the impact that hands-on operational improvements could have, especially in middle-market companies. Most people think private equity is just about buying and selling businesses for profit, but I found myself drawn to firms that took an operational approach.

I knew there was an opportunity to apply that same model to the lower middle market. I’ve always believed that when you combine strong operational expertise with strategic capital, you can unlock a company’s full potential. This is what we do at Aurora—we don’t just acquire companies, we help them grow by preserving their core strengths and building on them.

  • Q: You talk a lot about bringing operational focus to middle-market businesses. Why is this so important to you?

Joseph: I’ve seen firsthand how operational focus can transform a business. Many middle-market companies are family-owned or founder-led, and they’ve grown through passion and grit. But at some point, growth can stall due to limited resources or systems that aren’t scalable. That’s where we come in.

We bring a structured, repeatable approach to growth, helping businesses scale in a way that preserves their culture and legacy. I’ve always been passionate about ensuring that the companies we acquire continue to thrive—keeping the core team intact, retaining the company’s values, and making sure employees feel secure in the transition.

  • Q: What should business owners know about Aurora Capital’s approach?

Joseph: At Aurora, we understand that selling your business is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make. That’s why we take a hands-on, personalized approach to ensure that your legacy continues. We acquire 100% of the company, but our focus is on preserving what made your business special. We maintain the culture, protect your employees, and support its long-term growth.

We also understand the emotions involved—there can be anxiety about whether the values you’ve built will remain intact, or how your employees will adjust after the sale. That’s where our approach stands out. We work closely with you to address these concerns upfront, making the transition as seamless and reassuring as possible.

If you’re thinking about selling or exploring your options, I’d love to have a conversation about what comes next. Let’s talk and see how we can help make that transition smooth and successful.

About Me

“Aurora’s Focus on the Lower Middle Market is Highly Personal for Me”

Joseph Frasko, Founder of Aurora Capital

As an entrepreneur who has built and sold several companies, I understand the commitment it takes to turn a vision into reality. Having experienced the challenges of exiting a business, I started Aurora Capital in 2004 to help business owners transition smoothly. Our focus is on acquiring lower middle-market companies—often family-owned—where the spirit of the business is critical to its success.

We admire these companies because they are free of excessive bureaucracy and can move quickly to adapt and grow. While you may be ready to step back, our mission is to ensure that your company’s core values and legacy continue to thrive under new ownership.
